Flag Cake

July 4, 2009 § 2 Comments

I wanted to bake something with a flag theme for this 4th of July. Originally I had planned on baking red velvet cupcakes (cake recipe here) but decided to make Ina Garten’s Flag Cake. I’m a big fan of hers and her recipes, if you haven’t figured that out by now.

I really didn’t want to bake a whole half sheet of cake so I decided to cut the recipe in half and use the quarter sheet pan.  The only ingredients I didn’t halve was the vanilla extract. I decreased the amount to 1 teaspoon each for the cake and icing. If you don’t have a pastry bag and star tip, use a thick plastic bag like a freezer bag and reinforce the tip with about 5 layers of Scotch tape. Then cut a “W” shape into the tip to mimic a star tip. You can also just cut it on a slight slant instead of the “W” and will work just as nicely.

The cake turned out really nice and it was easy to assemble. Pretty, too.  The Mister thought it was too pretty to eat but he didn’t say no to a piece.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful 4th of July weekend. Stay safe and eat well!
