Mi Guadalajara – Revisited

While bustling around a couple of weekends ago, we stopped by a familiar place, Mi Guadalajara, but this time for lunch instead of the usual breakfast. It was our first time for lunch and I was pretty excited to try some of their dishes.
It was pretty busy on that Saturday. A fairly large party was on the higher level dining room, sounded like they were celebrating something. And a decent crowd in the center room. While looking over the menu, a nice lady brought over our chips and salsa. After spending several minutes trying to decide what to have, I finally settled on the Chili Colorado and the Mister on the El Molcajete. After we placed our order, our sodas were brought out.
We actually had to wait quite a long time before our entrees came because it seems like our impecable timing put our orders right behind the large party’s order. But our waiter was very apologetic about the wait and the nice lady kept filling up the chips and salsa, which I was plowing through because I was so hungry, and because I can really plow through chips and salsa!
Finally our order came. My Chili Colorado looked delicious! Beef in red chili sauce with mushrooms and onions. The sauce only had a tad bit of spice to it, much to my surprise because I thought it would be spicier just because of the name, and it had a nice tang too. The beef was tender and had a decent amount of onions and mushrooms. The dish came with a side of beans and rice, which I think is better than most Mexican establishments I’ve been too. I usually don’t like refried beans because I find many of them have an odd after taste and resembles something from a can. I don’t know if the refried beans here is from a can but I actually enjoy eating it. Smooth, creamy with a decent amount of beans for my taste (not overly abundant), and a decent flavor (could it be lard???).
The Mister’s El Molcajete (which I think means mortal and pestel in Spanish) was quite impressive. Everything except the sides was served in a very large mortal. I can’t remember all the ingredients and the online menu doesn’t have a description. What I do remember is loving the sauce more so than the Chili Colorado. I’m not familiar enough with Mexican cheese to tell you what those white wedges are but they had the consistency similar to Laughing Cow cheese but a bit crumblier. Very mild in taste. I loved the flavor of the green chili and it went well with the sauce and the beef all rolled together in a tortilla. The El Molcajete came with 2 extra sides, salsa fresca and guacamole, with a good heap of sour cream. The guacamole was pretty good and still had some bit of avocado in it, definitely made in house, not prepackaged runny, flavorless stuff. The salsa fresca was also very fresh.
All in all, albeit the long wait for our food, it was a good meal and we have to make it a point to come back again for lunch.
