A Couple of Revisits and Kitchen Remodel Update

October 2, 2009 § 2 Comments

For some reason, this week has been long. But I’m sure glad Friday is here, yippee!  So just a couple of revisits but before I get to those, a quick update on the kitchen remodel.

Cabinets have been ordered about a week ago (8 weeks out, ouch). Replacement windows selected and ordered.  So now it’s just sit and wait. Well, sort of.  I have to start clearing out the kitchen the next few weeks before the demo crew starts sometime in early November. We’ve gone granite browsing a couple of times at the granite yard but still need to actually pick out a couple that we like. Once we pick out the granite, then we can pick tiles to match for the backsplash and flooring. So overall, we’re moving forward, slowly but surely.  I also placed my appliance order this week, whew!

On one of our visits to the granite yard, we decided to swing by Fat Tony’s for lunch. The Mister wanted to try their pizza after L and I had lunchthere. We ordered a 14″ NY-style with pepperoni, mushroom and onion. It took about 20 minutes for our pie to bake up. We killed time by talking about the remodel and watching a little college football on the 2 flat screens. The pizza was worth the wait. The Mister said he could tell the pizza was going to be good because it had that thin sheen of oil on top. I knew exactly what he meant. Guess we’ll be coming back here when he gets his pizza cravings and I don’t feel like making it at home.

Another revisit this week was R & B Filipino Cuisine. You can read my first review here. I had mentioned to L that someone at the Mister’s work brought in homemade Filipino food for lunch. So that got her appetite mojo worked up for Filipino food.

I ordered squid (I think it’s called Adobong Pusit) and what I think was beef picadillo with quail eggs as my 2 item combo.

Here’s the squid. I enjoyed this dish although those who are a bit squimish about squid inards may want to avoid this one.  Here’s a shot of a cross-section. The squid had a nice flavor to it and a good pull, not overly chewy. I loved the onions. The pancit was also very good on this day.

Here’s a shot of the picadillo. I wasn’t all that thrilled with the quail eggs. The texture of the white part reminded of the soy sauce pickled eggs my mom used to make, slightly rubbery in texture. But these quail eggs didn’t have a whole lot of taste to it and I wasn’t able to relate to some people’s fascination and love for quail eggs. I’m also not a big fan of picadillo but I wanted to try this for the quail eggs. This I will pass on in the future.

That’s about it for this week. We’ve got some mix of weather for the weekend with possibly showers on Sunday. If you’re going out to the Air Show in Miramar, be sure to bring sunblock.
