Pangea Bakery Cafe

September 27, 2011 § 6 Comments

Even though I loaded up at Big Joy Family Bakery & Cafe, we still wanted to stop by Pangea Bakery Cafe. I’ve been wanting to stop by after reading about the pastries from CC (here) and Kirbie (here).  There were fresh buns being placed on the shelves as we walked in.

There were so many to choose from, what to do! So I kind of just started grabbing things that sounded and looked good. CC and I decided to sit and share a few things from our bounty and a chance for us to take some on-the-scene pics. This was the mochi taro pastry. It was okay. I liked the taro filling but it was kind of a weird texture with the mochi inside.

Here are a couple of custard buns (front) that I liked.

A look at the custard (picture was taken at home). There were a lot of custard, bordering on the edge of almost being too much. Almost.

This is the pork sung bun, my favorite. I grew up eating pork sung so no surprise that I enjoyed this.

Here’s a shot of the inside. A good amount of pork sung.

Both CC and I bought a couple of things from the 2-for-1 items. It was difficult to know what they were since there were no descriptions so we have to ask on some of them. We both got one of these. There were nuts and some kind of sweet filling.

Here’s a shot of the inside. Neither one of use was too fond of this one. The bread had a bit of green to it, matcha maybe??

This is the other 2-for-1 item that we both got. It’s got slivers of almonds on top and dried longans inside.

I thought I’d like this better since I like longans but there was kind of a medicinal taste to it that didn’t go well with the bread.

I loved the pork sung bun so much that I decided to get a couple of more before we left. It’s a good thing this place isn’t closer to home or else I’d be eating pork sun buns and custard buns for breakfast all the time. I think the prices are reasonable for San Diego.

So many tasty buns, so many calories! I had an almond coffee bun that surprised me with a coffee-flavored filling, but it was yummy. I also tried a black sesame bun that reminded me of black sesame pudding from my childhood.

So brave of you and CC to go to Big Joy AND Pangea on the same day!

Hi Sandy! There were so many to choose from and it’s so hard to resist some of them. And the fact that both places were so close together, we thought “let’s just throw caution to the wind!” 🙂

I was just thinking about Pangea earlier today. During my vacay I was spoiled by so many delicious bakeries selling breads. Every block I walked, there was at least one bakery. Ah I miss my breads already!

  • hi c – haha, when i went a few days ago with my friends, two women who worked there recognized me from work (they are parents of former graduates). they were super nice and kept asking me to try samples.

i didn’t like the longans pastry – it tasted odd to me. the pork was too dry for me as well. the big pastry had green tea and was dry. i like the taro mochi bun (it’s tc’s fave) but i like their blueberry cream cheese bun the best.

that was such a fun day!all those $#%@ carbs tho’, yikes.

Hey CC! Yeah, and I ended up eating most of those myself. But it was so much fun. I’ll have to try the blueberry cream cheese one next time I’m there.
