Smashburger Revisit

October 9, 2011 § 4 Comments

Since I screwed up and didn’t remember that Cazca Grill wasn’t open on Sundays, the Mister and I were at a loss about where to go as plan b. Hmm, he didn’t feel like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Crab Hut…so we settled on Smashburger. Good because we’ve been meaning to go back since our first visit. We wanted to try the burgers on a normal day without the crowd of the VIP event. Luckily the parking lot wasn’t too full but we got there towards the end of the lunch rush.

I read that Smashburger was introducing for a limited time the Windy City but when I got there, I decided against it since I wanted the haystack onions on the side, although I would have liked to have tried the pretzel bun. Maybe we’ll be back before it goes away. Anyway, we ended up pretty much getting the same burgers as last time. But this time I got the haystack onions instead of the sweet potato fries.

I enjoyed the San Diego burger just as much as the first time but I didn’t really care too much for the haystack onions. It reminded me of the blooming onions from Outback Steakhouse but these were very salty and limp. Think I’ll stick with the sweet potato fries from now on.

The Mister got Spicy Baja again with the Smash Fries. Just as good as the first time.

What was different this time were the shakes! You might recall that the last time our “sample” shakes were runny and just yucky. I wouldn’t have paid money for that one. But these were thick but not so thick that it clogged the straw and they were ddelicious! They came with  dollops of whipped cream on top but neither one of us ate that. Think I’ll ask them not to put the whipped cream on next time.

You could probably get the Windy City burger without haystack onions on it – I hear the pretzel bun is pretty tasty. We’re planning on trying it later this week. That, and the banana shake that’s also only here through the end of the month.

After trying all the various sides, I’m a Smashfries fan.

Hi Leanne! Yeah, I probably could have just ordered it without the onion, oh well. I think I like the Smashfries the best too. And they were really good on this day.

I feel like I’m the only person in San Diego who hasn’t tried Smashburger yet. Too bad about the haystack onions. I usually love onion strings and onion rings.

Hi Alyssa and thanks for stopping by. I usually love onion rings and strings, even the frozen kink but if the haystack onions were a little less salty, it would have been better. Some of the thinner pieces weren’t soggy, which tasted okay.
